Description

Changing Men, Changing Lives (CMCL) is a culturally specific program for Christian men who use intimate partner violence. CMCL is a supplement to Creating a Process of Change for Men Who Batter (CPC).

*To attend this training, you must have completed the CPC training.

Why CMCL?
Facilitators have frequently shared that Christian men with conservative religious beliefs often do not respect or respond to a process involving non-Christian facilitators who hold different spiritual beliefs. Facilitators who are unfamiliar with working with men who strongly identify with Christianity are often challenged to respond to Biblical verses. This results in participants either engaging in vigorous debate or disengaging themselves from the discussion altogether. A program that avoids dialogue about scripture that is used to justify male authority and abuse, or what the Bible states about the meaning of love and partnership, greatly reduces the effectiveness of the groups for Christian men. Those participants are left without the critical thinking and reflection that is essential to shifting core beliefs and changing abusive behavior. We help men see the contradictions in their thinking, between controlling and abusing their partner, and the love that Jesus told us to have for one another. We draw connections to the oppression of women and the oppression of all people groups. When men have a paradigm shift in their belief system, they often want to make significant behavior changes. In CMCL, they can use their faith as one of the resources to make that change.

Topics include:

  • Co-facilitation, modeling equality, dialogue, hierarchy
  • Complementarianism: its support of men’s control, abuse, & oppression of women
  • Egalitarianism: its connection to love, respect, & mutuality
  • Patriarchy, hierarchy, “headship”, submission
  • Masculinity, Jesus, love
  • 5R’s change process: repentance, remorse, restitution, restoration, reconciliation
  • Use of the Control Log & videos to analyze abusive behavior and promote dialogue
  • Use of the Equality Log to analyze respectful behavior and promote dialogue
  • Speaking the truth in love & developing a culture of accountability with compassion
  • Video Broken Vows
